AI without data governance is a risk, not strategy, warns Cybit 2026 report

Cybit, a leading provider of data intelligence and AI-driven technology solutions, has today announced the launch of its 2026 Technology Trends Report, warning that UK organisations may face growing vulnerability and risk across cloud infrastructure, cybersecurity, workplace technology and AI despite record levels of digital investment.

Based on analysis of major market shifts, regulatory changes and high-profile incidents in 2025, the report argues that many cloud and virtualisation strategies once considered “safe” are now exposing businesses to financial, operational and security risk.

Rob Hankin, Chief Technology Officer of Cybit, comments: “2025 was the year in which IT leaders took time to reflect on the covid-enforced digital transformation boom. This fast-paced technology acceleration, along with the corresponding rise of cyber threats, left many with an IT environment that met isolated needs but lacked due diligence around governance and future cost of ownership.

“In 2026, boards will be far less tolerant of complexity, waste and unclear accountability. The businesses that succeed will be those that simplify, govern and build resilience into their technology decisions.”

According to the report, there is a growing loss of confidence in traditional virtualisation and cloud models, with cost shocks and sovereignty concerns pushing organisations towards hybrid and multi-cloud approaches. The analysis highlights a major shift in cybersecurity priorities following high-profile UK incidents, where operational downtime proved more damaging than data loss itself.

The report also identifies a set of urgent actions businesses should prioritise in early 2026, including vendor reassessment, identity governance, AI readiness and workplace optimisation.
