BI WORLDWIDE releases Recogdemption report unveiling science-backed approach to employee engagement

BI WORLDWIDE (BIW), a global leader in employee engagement and recognition solutions has published its latest research report, Recogdemption.

The study introduces Recogdemption, which is a science-backed framework that connects three critical behaviours: recognition, redemption, and retention. This concept goes beyond traditional engagement models by showing how these elements work together as a self-sustaining cycle that drives measurable improvements in employee engagement and business performance.

The report draws on aggregated data from nearly one million employees across 118 countries, uncovering actionable insights for HR leaders and business executives.

The importance of early recognition

The analysis highlights that recognition holds real strategic value. When combined with meaningful rewards that employees can redeem, it becomes a powerful driver of engagement across the organisation. For example, employees who receive six or more recognitions within their first six months are significantly more likely to become highly engaged contributors.

Why redemption matters

Key findings from the report found that:

  • The $200 benchmark is a psychological tipping point for engagement. While 83% of orders fall below $200, higher-value rewards account for 60% of total order value, demonstrating their disproportionate impact on motivation.

There are two distinct redemption profiles: Spenders, who redeem frequently after 5–6 recognitions, and Savers, who wait longer and require tailored nudges. The first redemption is a critical milestone.

Employees typically engage with the rewards platform five times before redeeming, and two-thirds return within three months of their first redemption.

How does this impact employee retention?

Retention is the ultimate outcome that all businesses strive for, and the report shows it cannot be achieved through recognition alone. Recogdemption proves that engagement requires all three elements (recognition, redemption, and retention) working together as a cycle.

One finding from the report proves this. It found that employees who actively give, receive, and redeem recognition are four times more likely to stay for at least 18 months.

Gallup’s State of the Global Workplace 2025 reinforces this trend: well-recognised employees are 45% less likely to leave within two years, and those receiving high-quality recognition are 65% less likely to be actively job hunting.

Mike Davies, CEO at BI WORLDWIDE EMEA said: “Recogdemption is a blueprint for building cultures where people feel seen, valued, and motivated to stay. By applying behavioural science to recognition and reward strategies, organisations can actually create measurable impact on engagement and retention.”
