We welcome the UK government’s AI Opportunities Plan and wholeheartedly approve of its intention to supercharge the UK’s socioeconomic growth by harnessing the power of AI for all, with clear and decisive actions. The plan is a firm foundation for growth and a bold departure from the previous government’s focus on security as the key AI narrative. We’re particularly encouraged by the acknowledgement of sustainability as a major issue in the area of AI, which needs to be addressed urgently. As we reach a pivotal point in the AI lifecycle, the government has an unmissable opportunity to address rather than reinforce gaps in areas such as skills and investment.
Globally, research has proven that 71% of AI-skilled workers are men, compared to 29% of women; and only one in five older workers have been offered AI skills training, as opposed to almost 50% of younger workers. The UK’s AI investment is predominantly clustered in London, and only 33% of AI funding is directed towards companies in growth and established stages. These gaps will hinder the UK’s ability to innovate, expand and compete on a larger scale. As Europe’s largest business to business fibre provider and a critical part of the UK’s digital ecosystem, we look forward to hearing the next steps and participating in conversations to accelerate and deliver the plan.
