Pallet shuttle systems
A pallet shuttle is a powered unit that runs inside the storage channel. Your driver drops a pallet at the aisle face and the shuttle takes it from there. Nobody drives into the lane, so one of the most common causes of rack damage goes away. Channels can run far deeper than a forklift could safely reach.
This is high-density storage with the technology doing the travelling instead of your team. Your operators cover less ground, and you get back floor space that aisles were using. For most warehouses this is the first piece of automation they add.
Mobile pallet racking
Mobile pallet racking sits on powered bases that run on rails in the floor. Whole runs of racking slide sideways, so you only open an aisle where you need one. Because you are not keeping an empty aisle between every run, the same floor holds more. Access takes a little longer, so it works best for lines you do not touch daily.
Vertical lift modules
A vertical lift module, or VLM, is an enclosed cabinet of trays. Instead of your picker walking to find an item, the machine brings the tray to them. VLMs suit small parts, spares and components rather than full pallets. Most sites run them alongside pallet storage rather than instead of it.
Alongside these, some layouts raise density with no powered parts at all. Drive-in, push-back and double-deep racking all pack more in and control how stock flows. Deciding between first in, first out and first in, last out rotation is part of the same conversation.

What affects the cost of semi-automated pallet racking?
Scope and your building, far more than the equipment itself. Automating one storage block is a different order of spend from automating everything. Height and density both push the requirements upwards. Two warehouses buying the same technology can pay very different amounts.
Building work is what people underestimate most often. A floor needing repair can cost more than the kit standing on it. Whether your existing racking can be reused is another large variable. So is phasing, since spreading the work over time spreads the cost.

Pharmaceutical and healthcare

- A product range that changes often. A system you can reconfigure beats one built around today’s stock.
- Mixed SKU picking. These systems cope with variety without slowing the pick face down.

How do you find out which system suits your warehouse?
By having someone measure your building and model the options against your own stock. That is the only honest way to compare systems. Until then, any figure you are given rests on numbers nobody has taken. Suppliers of warehouse automation systems will survey your site before quoting, and many do it free.
When you speak to one, ask a few specific things. Do they design to SEMA standards, and are their installers SEIRS-registered? SEMA is the Storage Equipment Manufacturers’ Association, and SEIRS is its installer registration scheme. Will they model your layout before anything is ordered, and inspect the system afterwards? A good supplier will show you the design before you commit to anything.
