For years, the session border controller was treated as plumbing, a device that sat at the network edge and made sure calls arrived intact. That framing is outdated.

What an SBC actually does in the enterprise stack
A session border controller sits between an enterprise’s internal voice network and the public telephone network or a carrier’s SIP trunk. It translates protocols, normalizes codecs, enforces call admission policies, and protects the internal network from the outside world. Enterprises with offices across multiple regions need an SBC architecture that scales without a forklift upgrade every time headcount or call volume grows. That means asking vendors specific questions: how fast can a new region be provisioned, what happens during a regional outage, and what uptime SLA backs the answer.
