Video management software has quietly become one of the more competitive corners of enterprise IT.
What used to be a niche category — software that pulls footage from cameras into one interface — is now a battleground between legacy security giants, camera manufacturers, and a new wave of cloud-native challengers backed by venture capital.
The market is also consolidating fast, with several notable mergers and partnerships reshaping the competitive map this year.
Below is a rundown of the companies that matter most right now, organized by the different approaches they take to the same basic problem: how to record, store, search, and act on video from a growing number of cameras.
1. Genetec
Genetec’s Security Center has become one of the most widely deployed platforms in large enterprise and government deployments. Rather than being a pure VMS, it’s a unified platform that folds video management together with access control, license plate recognition, and intrusion detection, and it’s built around a federated architecture designed to let large organizations manage many distributed sites from one console. Genetec also offers a SaaS version of Security Center for buyers who want cloud delivery without giving up the platform’s enterprise depth — a hybrid approach that puts it in a different lane from purely cloud-native competitors.
2. Milestone Systems
Milestone XProtect is one of the longest-standing names in the space, with a track record stretching back more than two decades. It’s known for its open-platform philosophy — it supports an unusually large number of third-party camera models — plus features like Smart Map, an Alarm Manager, and built-in cybersecurity tooling for hardening video infrastructure. Milestone (owned by Motorola-rival camera maker Canon) also runs Arcules, a separate VSaaS (video-surveillance-as-a-service) product aimed at buyers who want cloud storage and remote access without adopting the full on-premises XProtect stack.

3. Avigilon (Motorola Solutions)
Avigilon, now part of Motorola Solutions, offers two distinct products: Avigilon Unity, a more traditional on-premises/hybrid VMS with deep analytics, and Avigilon Alta, a serverless cloud offering built to compete directly with newer cloud-native entrants. The Motorola ecosystem angle is a real differentiator — organizations already using Motorola radios or license-plate-recognition tools get a more unified platform by staying in-house.
4. Verkada
Verkada has become one of the best-known names in cloud-managed video, built around a turnkey model: proprietary cameras that store footage locally and sync to the cloud through the Verkada Command dashboard. The company has expanded well beyond cameras into access control, intercoms, alarms, and sensors, positioning itself as a single vendor for physical security rather than just video. Its pitch is aimed squarely at IT teams that want a polished, easy-to-deploy system without a dedicated security specialist on staff — though that convenience comes with tighter vendor lock-in, since Verkada cameras only work with the Verkada platform.
5. Rhombus
Rhombus takes a similar cloud-managed approach to Verkada but positions itself as more open to third-party hardware and priced for the mid-market. Founded in 2016 and based in Sacramento, the company has raised roughly $84 million to date. A significant validation came in March 2026, when Honeywell announced a partnership to distribute Rhombus’s cloud video and access control products through its channel partners in North America, with expansion to other regions expected to follow.
6. Eagle Eye Networks
Eagle Eye Networks built its reputation as one of the earliest true cloud-VMS platforms, notable for supporting hundreds of ONVIF-compliant third-party cameras rather than requiring proprietary hardware — a big selling point for organizations with existing camera investments. In December 2025, Eagle Eye merged with access-control company Brivo, and the combined company is still working through platform consolidation, so buyers evaluating either product are advised to check current feature parity across the former product lines.
7. Axis Communications
Axis Camera Station is the software arm of Axis Communications, one of the biggest names in IP camera hardware. It’s optimized specifically for Axis cameras — automatic device discovery, bulk firmware management, and tight hardware integration — but also supports a range of compatible third-party devices. It scales from small installations up to multi-server enterprise deployments, with pricing that ranges from a free tier for very small sites up to custom enterprise licensing.
8. Bosch
Bosch VMS is built to manage video, audio, and data across IP networks, with particularly tight integration with Bosch’s own CCTV hardware line alongside interfaces for third-party systems. It remains a strong choice for organizations already standardized on Bosch security hardware.
9. Verint and NICE
Both Verint and NICE have long-standing enterprise security and analytics businesses that include video management components, often aimed at large organizations that want video tied closely into broader security and workforce analytics platforms rather than a standalone camera-viewing tool.
10. IncoreSoft
IncoreSoft, founded in 2015, pairs its own video management system with an AI analytics layer built around 18 specialized detection modules — things like face recognition, hard hat/PPE detection, license plate recognition, smoke and fire detection, and rail-car/container tracking. Its positioning is camera-agnostic: the VMS and analytics modules work with any ONVIF-compliant IP camera and are already integrated with hardware and software from Axis, Milestone, Genetec, Hikvision, Dahua, and Bosch, so it can be layered on top of an existing VMS rather than requiring a rip-and-replace. IncoreSoft offers on-premise, cloud, and hybrid deployment, claims sub-50ms inference latency for real-time alerting, and lists ISO 27001 alignment and GDPR readiness. It’s a fit for organizations — smart cities, retail, industrial sites, transportation, and education among its named verticals — that want to add AI-driven analytics to video infrastructure they’ve already invested in.
11. Regional and value-focused players
A tier of vendors — including GeoVision, Exacq Technologies, OnSSI, Surveon, Aimetis, Hanwha Vision, and Ubiquiti (UniFi Protect) — round out the market. These range from budget-friendly, no-subscription local VMS options (UniFi Protect is frequently cited as the go-to for organizations that want to avoid monthly licensing fees entirely) to regionally strong players in the Middle East and Asia-Pacific security markets.
The bigger trend: consolidation and the cloud shift
A few things stand out about the VMS market in 2026:
- Cloud (VSaaS) growth is accelerating. The global video-surveillance-as-a-service market is projected to reach roughly $7.8 billion in 2026, and buyers are increasingly asking which cloud architecture fits best rather than whether cloud is trustworthy at all.
- Consolidation is picking up speed. The Brivo–Eagle Eye Networks merger and the Honeywell–Rhombus partnership both point toward a market moving away from video as a standalone product and toward unified physical-security platforms that bundle video, access control, and analytics.
- AI search is now table stakes. Natural-language video search — the ability to type something like “person in a red jacket” and get matching clips — has moved from a differentiator to an expected feature across most of the cloud-native platforms.
- Camera lock-in remains the central trade-off. Turnkey platforms like Verkada offer polish and simplicity in exchange for proprietary hardware; more open platforms like Rhombus, Eagle Eye, and Genetec trade some of that polish for the ability to keep existing camera investments.
Choosing between them
There’s no single “best” VMS — the right pick depends heavily on a few factors:
- Existing hardware: If you already have a large fleet of ONVIF-compliant cameras, an open platform (Eagle Eye, Genetec, Milestone, Axis) will save significant money over ripping and replacing.
- IT resources: Organizations without a dedicated security team tend to gravitate toward fully managed cloud platforms (Verkada, Rhombus, Avigilon Alta) that minimize maintenance overhead.
- Scale and sites: Multi-site, multi-region deployments benefit most from platforms built around federated or centralized cloud dashboards; single-site deployments often don’t need the premium that comes with them.
- Compliance requirements: Government and regulated buyers should confirm NDAA/TAA compliance status directly with vendors, since this varies and changes over time.
